Grant supports Kosair Charities Child Advocacy Center, HANDS home visitation program

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (July 20, 2016) – Thanking Family & Children’s Place for its “commitment to children with special needs,” the WHAS Crusade for Children has awarded $20,000 to the agency to support its work with children and families hurt by abuse.

Family & Children’s Place is the leading agency in the Greater Louisville area providing preventive and corrective solutions through six program areas – Child & Family Services, Child Advocacy Center, Family & School Services, Family Stabilization Program, HANDS and the PAL Initiative –to the complex issues surrounding children who have been witness or subject to violence, neglect and abuse.

crusadeSpecifically, the Crusade for Children funds will support the HANDS family visitation program, and compassionate, coordinated care at the Kosair Charities Child Advocacy Center (KCCAC).

“The WHAS Crusade for Children is a longtime supporter of Family & Children’s Place, and we are delighted to have its  support again to give hope, help and healing to families impacted by abuse,” said JT Henderson, vice president of Philanthropy. “This grant is especially important as it provides preventative support through HANDS and healing therapy for the hurt and injured at the KCCAC.”

HANDS, which is expected to support nearly 800 families this year, provides voluntary in-home visitation for new and expectant parents to foster healthy pregnancy and births; stable child growth and development; safe homes and self-sufficient families.

Using the “Growing Great Kids” curriculum, endorsed by Healthy Families America, HANDS staff helps families build healthy, safe environments for the optimal growth and development of their children.

The KCCAC provides compassionate, trauma-informed intervention, treatment and investigation of child sexual and physical abuse. Therapists, forensic interviewers, the Crimes Against Children Unit of Louisville Metro Police, Child Protective Services, Commonwealth’s Attorney office and physicians from the University of Louisville School of Medicine work collaboratively to stop, investigate and prosecute child abuse and help child survivors and families heal.

Last year, KCCAC professionals stopped the trauma of sexual and physical abuse and provided compassionate and comprehensive care for more than 1,300 Louisville-area children.
