Louisville Metro External Agency Fund awards $35,000 to child service agency

External Agency Fund grant will support out of school program for Meyzeek Middle School students

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Oct. 4, 2016) – Family & Children’s Place, the leading agency in Louisville and Southern Indiana focused solely on prevention, intervention and treatment of child violence, abuse and neglect, received a $35,000 grant from the Louisville Metro External Agency Fund.

loulogoThe grant will support at-risk students in the Collaborative Learning After-School Program (CLASP) at Meyzeek Middle School in downtown Louisville.

“We are thrilled to have the support of Louisville Metro Government, proud that it agrees that we are making a positive impact on the students and their families, and appreciate the chance to give at-risk students the hand up they need to succeed,” said Jo Cruz, director of the agency’s Family & School Services (FSS) program.

CLASP is a 12-month out of school time program for students referred by teachers or school administrators FSS team, and efforts are aimed at improving students’ academic success and engaging parents.

The emphasis is on character building, learning, social competencies, and building a core support team for the student comprising FSS caseworkers, school administrators, parents and family members. CLASP programming occurs immediately after school and in the evenings, peak times for juvenile crime and risky behaviors for youth in this age demographic.

The program provides positive alternatives and solutions to the negative environment through highly structured interactive hands-on activities that help students develop positive values and self-worth and improve social competencies, all aimed at giving students the support and skills they need to succeed.

Louisville Metro External Agency Funds are Louisville Metro General Funded grants awarded to non-profit organizations offering programs or services that advance the long-range vision and goals established by Louisville/Jefferson County Metro Government.
