When 13-year-old Mia came to the Child Advocacy Center for a forensic interview following sexual abuse, she was overwhelmed with fear and anxiety. During the interview, she disclosed both her abuse and thoughts of self-harm. Mia’s trauma started at a young age, with abuse by a biological parent and living in multiple foster homes.

Because the CAC is co-located with crimes against children’s units for social services and law enforcement, a safety plan was immediately created, and Mia received a medical exam and mental health evaluation — all in one place. The FCP Advocate connected Mia to ongoing resources and therapy, and she expressed deep gratitude for the compassion and care shown. Feeling safe, supported, and believed allowed Mia to receive the critical help she needed and begin her path toward healing.
